The Publishing Point

The point where publishing meets the future...

Maggie Hilliard

Cory Doctorow - Publishing Point Perspectives (interviewed by Susan Danziger) - October 2009

In this video, Cory Doctorow describes a new experiment he's launching in which he serves as author, publisher, distributor and bookseller. He also shares his thoughts about the ways in which traditional roles in publishing are becoming blurred. And he touches on strategies that have made the popular on-line community Boing Boing (where he serves as co-editor) so successful, including how he and his co-editors started Boing Boing at almost no cost. He can be found at Craphound.com.

takeaways: poddisc.com duplicates CDs on demand; au format file is a patent-free (cheaper) alternative to mp3; publishers capitalize book, manage production, actively sell it to thousands of accounts, and actively market it or hire somebody to do so; rather than trying to serve an audience, bloggers say what they want to say and the platform allows readers who share those interests to find them; affiliate link rewriters allow buyers to redirect affiliate program proceeds
