The Publishing Point

The point where publishing meets the future...

Jonathan Nowell, President, Nielsen Book - Publishing Point Perspectives - November 2009

In this recent interview for The Publishing Point, Jonathan Nowell, President of Nielsen Book, speaks with Susan Danziger about what recent research findings are telling us about a wide range of industry issues. What do consumers think about ebook prices? What will be the impacts on the book industry of an aging population and a less affluent, time-starved generation of younger readers? How should publishers and booksellers respond to these demographic trends and how quickly should they expect book-buyers to return when the recession ends?

Takeaways: consumer behavior continues to be characterized by restraint; consumers expect downloads to be free; competition for consumer's time continues to increase; Nielsen is building an ebook panel to report ebook sales and will launch soon; authors will probably disintermediate publishers and bookstores by selling ebooks direct to consumers
